There is now compelling evidence that physical activity is important for health and has great potential for health gain. Physical inactivity is strongly linked with a range of physical and mental health problems.
The 'Warwickshire Partnership Actively coordinating Health' or P.A.C.E. scheme is a partnership of agencies across the country that seeks to promote the health of local people through physical activity.
P.A.C.E. is designed to increase the number of people who take part in moderate activity on a regular basis and who have medical conditions which will benefit from this increased activity. Patients with existing health problems, who are not currently physically active are refered to a local Leisure Centre to learn the skills for exercising effectively.
In Nuneaton Red Roofs Surgery and the Jubilee Sports Centre are part of this scheme and so far have an extremely high success rate.
A patient can be referred by their G.P. if:
aged 16+, considered inactive ie: participates in 30 minutes or less of moderate intensity activity per week* and motivated to become more physically active.
Plus one or more of the following conditions:
*moderate intensity activity includes any activities that make you breathe harder than normal and become slightly warmer but still able to hold a conversation. eg: brisk walks, swimming, cycling, heavy housework, cleaning the car etc.
The scheme is designed around 24 exercise sessions over a 12 week period (2 sessions per week) which take place at the Jubilee Sports Centre. Patients purchase vouchers at the centre and use a voucher each time they attend an exercise session. Patients are provided with an individually designed 12 week exercise programme, with fully qualified staff to enable each person to gain as many health benefits from their programme as possible. The programme is tailored to meet the needs of the patient in terms of their age, abilities, medical conditions and preferences. Throughout the programme qualified staff are are there for guidence, support and motivation.
"It has made a huge difference. The programme was designed to increase my abilities at a speed that suited me".
"I feel more able to carry out my daily routine and i have greatly improved my walking ability".
"I have made new friends and i enjoy my time greatly".
"Getting fitter, arthritis doesn't hurt so much".
"My programme is tailored so thst the exercises i do avoid any physical problems i have".
